Work Choice

Work Choice can help you get and keep a job if you’re disabled and find it hard to work.

It’s voluntary – you don’t have to do it. The type of support you get depends on the help you need. This is different for everyone but can include:

  • Training and developing your skills
  • Building your confidence
  • Interview coaching

    Work Choice is delivered by different providers across the country. Providers offer 2 levels of help.

    Specialist Employability Support

    Specialist Employability Support provides mentoring and training to help you into work if you’re disabled and can’t use other employment programmes. For further information click here

    There are 2 types of support available. The one best suited to your needs will be determined through an initial assessment. You’ll get either:

  • The Specialist Employability Support Start Back Provision, which provides intensive support and training for up to 6 months
  • The Specialist Employability Support Main Provision, which provides longer-term support and training for an agreed length of time (usually 12 months)
  • Access to Work

    If you’re disabled or have a physical or mental health condition that makes it hard for you to do your job, you can:

  • Talk to your employer about changes they must make in your workplace
  • Apply for Access to Work if you need extra help

    Work Preparation Support

    Carers can volunteer for what is called ‘Work Preparation Support’ from the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP) through Jobcentre Plus. For further information click here

    Work Together (Volunteering):

    There is also the ‘Work Together’ programme which can help you if you are unemployed and looking for work. ‘Work Together’ is a volunteering programme designed to help you get back into work. You can volunteer with a local organisation which can help you work temporarily and gain experience and skills.

    Scope Employment Services

    Scope offer employment support programmes for working-aged disabled people. Helping them to find and keep a job. They do this through pre-employment support, job matching and in-work support.

    People Matter

    The People Matter Trust Limited is a charity providing information and advice on job searching and in-work support services for people looking for employment, returning to work or struggling at work.     British Association of Supported Employment (BASE)

    BASE is the national trade association for the supported employment sector. Its aim is to support, promote and develop the principles and provision of supported employment. While it does not provide employment support directly, its members work in close partnership with employers and other agencies to secure sustainable employment for people with a disability or other disadvantage.     Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI)

    Offers support for returning to work if claiming any health-related benefits through the Work Programme and Access to Work schemes.
    Specialised employment courses are run at offices across the south-east including:

    • CV building
    • Interview preparation
    • Job searching and application
    • Confidence building

    In addition, RBLI’s Condition Management team provide a range of additional modules focused around managing a disability or health condition in the workplace.
